Help
This site has the texts we recite at the Sankathara Chaturthi pooja: the Ganapati Atharvashirsha and the aartis (Marathi and Hindi), as written or in Kannada letters, with English transliteration (in an everyday or a scholarly spelling). It works without internet once opened.
Put it on your phone
Tap App (phone with an arrow) in the row of buttons on the home page, or Add to Home Screen under About in Settings. On Android and in Chrome or Edge on a computer this usually installs it in one tap; otherwise it shows the steps for your phone or browser (on a Mac in Safari: Share or File → Add to Dock).
iPhone (Safari or Chrome)
Open the site in Safari. If you opened it from WhatsApp, Mail or Messages, tap the compass or ⋯ icon to open it in Safari first; those built-in viewers don't have the option.
Tap the Share button (square with an arrow) at the bottom of Safari. On iOS 26, tap ⋯ first, then Share. In Chrome it is at the top right.
Swipe the list up (or tap View More) and tap Add to Home Screen. Not there? Tap Edit Actions… at the bottom of the list and turn it on.
Tap Add.
1. Tap ShareOn iOS 26: ⋯ first2. Add to Home Screen3. Tap Add
Android
Open the site in Chrome.
Tap the ⋮ menu at the top right.
Tap Add to Home screen or Install app, then Install or Add.
1. Tap ⋮2. Add to Home screen3. Tap Install
Mac (Safari)
Click File in the menu bar at the top of the screen (or the Share button in Safari's toolbar).
Click Add to Dock…, then Add. This needs macOS Sonoma or newer.
File → Add to Dock…
Computer (Chrome or Edge)
Click the install icon at the right end of the address bar (or the button above), then Install.
Click the install icon
The icon opens the site like an app, even without internet. If you switch away and come back, it returns to where you were reading.
Today
The top of the home page is your day: the picture follows the time of day (sunrise, midday, sunset) with the day's star ringed, then the date, the days of this week and Morning, Afternoon and Evening.
The session starts on the one for the time now: Morning until 12 noon, Afternoon until 5 pm, Evening after that. Tap another to see its texts. For now every day has the same routine: Morning is the Ganapati Atharvashirsha, Evening the ten aartis, and the Afternoon is free.
The days (Monday to Sunday): tap one to see that day's routine; tap today to come back.
The list under it has the session's texts in order. Tap the round tick when you have finished one; the ticks are kept on this phone for today and start fresh tomorrow. Tap a title to open it.
Start (or Continue, once some are ticked) opens the first text not yet ticked. While you read, Next › in the bottom bar goes to the next text of the session, and after the last one brings you back here.
On a computer: Tab to the days or the sessions, then use the arrow keys; Space ticks a text.
Folding the card (⌃) leaves the session's list in view. The list of every text (अनुक्रमणिका / Contents) is still under it.
The date card
The line under Morning / Afternoon / Evening shows the next Sankathara Chaturthi and its moonrise time for where you are. Angaraki Sankathara Chaturthi (on a Tuesday) is marked.
Pin (after the place name, or 📍 Use my location): tap to use your phone's location. The town is worked out on the phone; your location is never sent anywhere.
The picture: tap the Ganesha picture on the card to see it full screen. Pinch or double-tap to zoom, drag to look around; ✕, Back or a tap outside closes it.
Fold the card: the round ⌃ button at the top right of the card, or a tap beside the picture, folds it to one line (Ganesha, the next date and moonrise); ⌄ or a tap on that line opens it again with all the buttons. On the home page the Ganesha home buttons (top bar title, bottom bar) do the same: tap to close the card, tap again to open it. Your phone remembers this. On Sankashti day the card opens by itself.
Fold what you don't need: the Contents button on the home page folds the list of pieces, and a tap anywhere on a piece's heading (or its round ⌃) folds that piece down to its heading; tap it again to open it. The Fold all / Open all button on the आरती / Aarti heading folds or opens every aarti at once. Your phone remembers these. Going to a folded piece from Contents or search opens it.
Only here for the aartis? Tap the पूजा / Pooja heading above the Atharvashirsha to fold the Pooja section away; tap it again (the arrow points down while folded) to bring it back. Your phone remembers this. Going to the Atharvashirsha from Contents, search or Previous opens it again. The आरती / Aarti heading folds the aartis the same way.
Autoscroll: turn it on in ⚙ Settings (Autoscroll); it is off until you do. A round ▶ then appears in the bottom bar; tap it and the page scrolls by itself through the Pooja and the aartis. It folds the home card and the contents, opens every piece, and starts from the piece on screen (or the first one). A section you have folded (Pooja or Aarti) is skipped. Each sung line gets the same time; − and + set the speed (1–10) of the piece you are on, and each piece remembers its own speed, since each has its own tempo. ‹ Prev and Next › go to the previous or next piece. With the dhrupad shown once, it waits at each ↻ ध्रुपद while the dhrupad is sung and shows it in the bubble. While it runs, Prev and Next make way for the speed, so one piece flows into the next. Scroll by hand any time, or hold a finger still to pause; when you let go it carries on from there. In Marathi + English it moves through each whole stanza, both languages, in the time the Marathi takes. ⏸ stops it. The screen stays on while it runs.
Date strip: swipe to see past and future dates; tap one to show it. “Back to next Sankathara Chaturthi” returns.
Calendar icon next to the date: adds that day's pooja (7:00–8:30 pm, at Bharatiya Hindu Temple when you are in central Ohio) to your calendar with a reminder 2 hours before. On a computer it downloads a calendar file for you to open. On an iPhone it opens Calendar's Add screen. On Android it opens your calendar app with the event filled in, and the app's own reminder setting applies. Past dates have no icon.
Add all upcoming dates to calendar: adds every coming Sankathara Chaturthi at once.
Next Chaturthi date: the card leads with the next Sankashti date and its moonrise. The strip of past and coming dates and the calendar links wait under More dates: tap it to show them. On Sankashti day the moonrise is in large type with how long until it rises and, in central Ohio, the pooja time; the contents below are larger too, and the App, Share, QR, Print and Help buttons also wait under More dates.
Buttons at the top
Home (Ganesha and title): back to the start. While you read, the title shows the piece on screen (for example ५. दत्ताची आरती).
Contents and search (lines with a magnifier): jump to any aarti, or type a few letters of a line in Marathi, English or Kannada to find it. Plain letters are enough, and spelling is forgiving: sukhakarta, ganpati and vithal find sukhakartā, Ganapati and Vitthal. The matching words are shown in bold; tap a result to go to that line. On a computer you can type straight away, and use ↑ ↓ and Enter.
अ/A (language; ಕ/A in Kannada): each tap goes main language → second language → both together, and says which shows now and what the next tap shows (pick them in Settings). With no second language, it opens Settings at the second-language list.
धृ (dhrupad): show the refrain once at the top, or repeated after every stanza. In “once” mode, tap ↻ ध्रुपद under a stanza to see the refrain; tap anywhere to close it.
⚙ Settings: opens as its own page, over the reading page; ‹ Back (or your phone's Back) returns you to where you were. See below.
Settings
Settings is in four groups: Languages, Reading, Screen and About.
Main language: the language you read in, in large text: मराठी (the text as written), English (in English letters) or ಕನ್ನಡ (the same words in Kannada letters). Tap it to pick from a list; English is there twice, once for each spelling (see English spelling below). With Kannada the menus are in English, and the second language can be English or None.
Second language: shown smaller, under each line, when the अ/A button shows both. Pick the other language, or None to read in one language only. Picking your second language as the main one swaps the two.
Menus and buttons: English or मराठी, for the date card, buttons and settings (shown only with Marathi as the main language; otherwise menus are in English).
Preview: the first lines of the Ganapati aarti, as your choices will show them.
English spelling: picked with English in the language list, as English · Sukhkarta or English · sukhakartā: how the English lines and the titles of the pieces are spelled.
Sukhkarta: the everyday spelling most of us read easily.
sukhakartā: the scholarly spelling (IAST), with exact sounds: ā ī ū for long vowels, ṭ ḍ ṇ for the hard sounds, ś ṣ for the two kinds of “sh”. In the Atharvashirsha it also shows the swara marks: a line under a syllable is the low note (anudātta) and a tick above is the svarita (bha̱draṃ karṇe̍bhiḥ).
It changes straight away and keeps your place.
Text font: how the aartis look. Standard (clean, already on your phone), Classic (book style, like a printed pothi), Bold (strong strokes, good in low light) or Handwritten. A new font downloads once when you pick it and then works offline. The Atharvashirsha keeps its Sanskrit lettering. The printout uses it too, unless you pick another font in the Print pop-up.
Text size (A− / A+ / ↺ to reset).
Dhrupad: the refrain once at the top, or after every verse (the same as the धृ button). The Print pop-up can set it for the printout only.
Layout (wide screens only): one or two columns of stanzas.
Theme (Auto, Light, Sepia, Dark).
High contrast and Keep screen on: switches; tap to turn on or off. Keep screen on starts on for phones and tablets and off on computers.
About: this Help, Add to Home Screen (until the site is installed), and one line: the version (v1.3), whether the site is saved for offline use, and Check for updates; tap it to check (see Good to know below).
While reading
Tap a line to highlight it, so everyone can keep their place; its whole stanza gets a soft band too, so you find it again at a glance. Tap again to clear.
More room to read: on phones and tablets, the top and bottom bars slide away as you scroll down, leaving a thin strip with the name of the piece. Scroll up a little, tap a blank part of the page or the strip, or reach the end of the page to bring them back.
Pinch (on a computer: a trackpad pinch, or Ctrl + / Ctrl − and Ctrl 0 to reset; ⌘ on a Mac) or use A− / A+ (under Aa in the bottom bar, or in Settings) to change the text size. The page itself never zooms. On the top card of the home page a pinch does nothing, and the rest of the home page grows only a little. The bubble shows the size (100% is the normal size for your screen); right after a pinch, tap ↺ Default size to go back to normal.
Back: your phone's Back button (or swipe) closes an open menu or box, then goes back to where you were before the last jump, for example from an aarti back to the contents.
Bottom bar (on every page):‹ Prev and Next › go to the neighbouring pieces (on the home page, Next opens the first piece); the Ganesha (home) and contents-and-search buttons work just like the ones at the top. On the smallest phones Prev and Next show just their arrows. Like the top bar it keeps its size when you change the text size or pinch, and it steps aside while Settings or Contents is open.
Aa (bottom bar): slides up the reading choices within reach of your thumb: Language (main, second or both, the same as the अ/A button), Text size (A− and A+, with ↺ to go back to the normal size) and Dhrupad (once, or after every verse), plus All settings. Your place stays put as you change them. Tap outside it, ✕ or your phone's Back to close it.
Tilt to scroll (phones and tablets): tap the tilted-phone button in the bottom bar, holding the phone however is comfortable. Lean the top of the phone away from you and the page moves down; lean it back towards you and it moves up. The further you lean, the faster it goes; hold it still and the page stays put. The dot in the bar shows the lean. Touch the page to hold it; when you let go, the way you are holding the phone then becomes the new "still". ⏸ stops it. On an iPhone, tap Allow when it asks for motion access (only the first time). The tilt is read on the phone; nothing is sent anywhere.
The screen stays on while the site is open (you can turn this off in Settings).
Share, QR and Print
These sit in one row at the bottom of the top card on the home page, with App and Help. On narrow phones each word sits under its icon.
Share sends a ready reminder with the next date, pooja time, moonrise and the link, for WhatsApp or messages.
QR shows a code others can scan with their camera to open the site.
Print makes a printout or PDF of the contents and all the texts, in the language and English style you have chosen: choose Portrait or Landscape. One language prints in a column (the Atharvashirsha as running paragraphs, like a printed booklet); both languages print side by side, on Landscape only. Pick the Dhrupad (Once or Every verse) and the Print font for the printout: they start as in Settings, are remembered for your next printout, and leave the reading page as it is. A sample line shows the font. Then tap Print. In Safari, also choose Landscape in the print dialog for Landscape, or the printout comes out small; on a Mac, Chrome prints it best. On an iPhone, if it asks, tap Ready: Print now. From the Home Screen app, tap Open in Safari (or Copy link and paste it into Safari): your choices go with it.
Good to know
Works without internet: the first time you open the site it is saved on your phone, and a short “Ready to use offline” note shows. Settings → About shows “Offline ready” beside the version once it is saved. With no internet, a small cloud with a line through it shows in the top bar: the saved copy is in use, and everything still works.
Getting updates: new changes load by themselves whenever you are online. To look straight away, open Settings and tap Check for updates under About: it shows “Checking…”, then “Up to date” (or “No internet”), or reloads with the new version.
Privacy: your settings and location stay on your phone. Nothing is sent anywhere.
Moonrise times are calculated on your phone and may differ by a few minutes from printed calendars.
